(If a student is listed as repeating a grade- 9R, 10R, 11R -he or she could qualify for classes that are listed as the next grade level. For instance, a student with a 10R status could be able to enroll in a course open to 11th and 12th grade students.)

*Students may take either Biology or Honors Biology for a science credit, but not both.

5577 - EARTH SCIENCE   (Y)
10th, 11th and 12th Grade only This is a survey course involving the study of geology, meteorology, astronomy, and oceanography.  The process and methods of science are emphasized with laboratory work involving the use of scientific methods to solve problems and answer questions.  The development of the earth and its life, as recorded in rocks and minerals, is of prime importance.  Special emphasis is given to the geology of Kansas.

5640 - BIOLOGY (Y)
10th, 11th, and 12th Grades Biology is a survey course involving the study of living things. The process and methods of science are emphasized with laboratory work involving the use of scientific method to solve problems and answer questions.  Course work will include: characteristics of life, cell structure and function, genetics and cell division, plant and animal structure and classification, human structure and function, and ecological relationships.  This is one of the three courses recommended for the college focus curriculum—Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

5644 - HONORS BIOLOGY (Y)
10th, 11th, and 12th Grades This course is designed for high achievers and those who have special interests or talents in biology.  The course will provide the student with a greater in-depth look at biology and provide a firm foundation for those considering biological related careers.  Areas of study will include use of scientific methods, molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, the study of plants, and animal and human anatomy. This is one of the three courses recommended for the college focus curriculum—Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

5645 – AP BIOLOGY (Y)
11th and 12th Grades   This is a college class with lecture and laboratory instruction, which expands upon topics presented in Biology and Honors Biology, with emphasis on biochemical processes.  Successful performance on a standardized test at the completion the course may result in credit granted in biology at colleges and universities.

5649 - APPLICATIONS IN BIOLOGY & CHEMISTRY 2 (Y)
10th, 11th and 12th Grades This course involves ecology, water relationships, air and gases, and synthetic materials in the technological context of everyday life.  It uses an applications-oriented approach to teach the concepts of biology and chemistry.  The course emphasizes problem-solving, decision-making, and hands-on learning. This is one of the three courses recommended for the tech focus curriculum—Biology, ABC 2, and Physics in Technology.

5650 - PHYSIOLOGY
10th, 11th and 12th Grades This is an advanced course in the study of the human body.  Points of special consideration are cells, bones and skeleton, muscles, nervous system, eyes and vision, ears and hearing, foods, mouth, stomach, intestines, respiratory structures and breathing, blood, heart and circulation, skin, kidneys, glandular system, and human reproduction and genetics.  Lab work includes the dissection of mammalian organs and a study of their processes.

5661 - INTRODUCTORY SCIENCE (Y)
10th, 11th and 12th Grades. This is an entry-level science class. It is an overview of the changing nature of the world around us. Topics include 1) physics--the motion of objects, the forces that move objects, and heat and energy transfer and 2) chemistry--atomic structure, a survey of chemical reactions and energy changes during chemical reactions.

5680 - CHEMISTRY (Y)
10th, 11th and 12th Grades Chemistry is a course designed to give an understanding of all the implications, properties and contrasting conditions that are involved in chemical reactions.  The experimental nature and foundation of chemistry is reinforced by use of numerous laboratory experiments. This is one of the three courses recommended for the college focus curriculum—Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

5685 - AP CHEMISTRY (Y)
11th and 12th Grade This course is designed to be equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first year of college.  Students may obtain advanced placement credit if they opt to take the AP examination.

5690 – PHYSICS (Y)
11th and 12th Grades Physics is a study of the continuing processes and changes within the physical works.  Laboratory experiments are used extensively to introduce and reinforce the theoretical aspects of the subject.  Major topics include rectilinear, circular and projectile motions and forces, electricity and magnetism, optics and waves, kinetic theory and heat, and matter and atomic structure.  Special projects will be incorporated throughout the year including rocket launches, egg drop competitions, air track experiments, superconductivity demonstrations, Millikan oil drop experiment, and radioactivity labs. This is one of the three courses recommended for the college focus curriculum—Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
5800 – SCIENCE LAB ASSISTANT (Y)
Consent
Two years of prior coursework is recommended. Students accepted by science teachers for this assignment will receive instruction in the preparation of laboratory materials and will assist the teacher in routine laboratory and classroom duties as well as lab assistant during class lab sessions.  Enrollment as a lab assistant does not fulfill and science requirement.

5912 - HEALTH CAREERS (S)
This course will explore some of the more than 200 careers in the area of health or related fields by use of research, discussions, films, speakers and field trips.  Students also organize health projects.
