SUCCESS ACADEMY CONCEPT

* The transition from middle school to high school can be difficult for many students; therefore, the Success Academy model was adopted for Highland Park High School. The model was developed by Johns Hopkins University due to the fact that most students who drop out of high school due so due to failure at the 9th grade level. The Success Academy is considered a drop-out prevention program with the following characteristics:

• The Highlander Success Academy is a “school within a school concept”

• The Highlander Success Academy is a self-contained program with its own administrator, counselor, and teachers, separated from the rest of the high school- this helps to create a smaller, focused, more personal educational environment that assists in meeting individual needs.

• The goal of the Highlander Success Academy is to assist students in staying in school and earning promotion to the next grade level by focusing on school attendance; successful completion of course work, including reading and math; smaller class load; providing a caring and positive learning environment; teaming ; and a high school readiness course, Success 101

• The Highlander Success Academy has a dress code in order to decrease distractions that may impact the focus on learning
